Trafalgar Towers is a 16-storey absolute-waterfront apartment resort at 120 Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore, standing on the north bank of the Maroochy River a short distance upstream from the river mouth and Cotton Tree. Its 15-berth private marina is promoted as the largest resort marina on the Maroochy River, and while that is a modest claim in absolute terms, it captures something real: on a river lined with holiday towers, Trafalgar is the one where guests can arrive by boat, tie up below their apartment and treat the river as their front yard. The marina is strictly a guest amenity, with boat and jet-ski moorings bookable through reception at minimal cost, subject to availability, but it changes the rhythm of a stay. Families fish directly from the pontoon, where bream, dusky flathead, whiting, trevally and estuary cod are caught regularly enough that the resort maintains a fish-cleaning table with fresh water, and resident pelicans attend the filleting. Kayaks are hired from reception for paddles upriver, and the tour desk books deep-sea fishing charters and winter whale-watching trips departing from Mooloolaba. The tower itself houses 50 fully self-contained two and three-bedroom apartments, all with river-facing balconies, wrapped around a heated wet-edge pool and spa that hangs over the river's edge. The setting is urban-coastal rather than secluded: Sunshine Plaza's 400-odd shops are a stroll away, the Ocean Street dining precinct is close, and Maroochydore's surf beach is about a kilometre and a half over the bridge. For trailer boat families on a Sunshine Coast holiday, it solves the eternal problem of where to leave the boat overnight.

Berthing & shoreside services

The marina comprises 15 berths on the resort's river frontage, supplied with power and water, and that is the deliberate extent of it: there is no fuel berth, no pump-out, no lift or hardstand, and no marine trades on site. Moorings are reserved for staying guests, bookings must be confirmed through reception and are subject to availability, and jet skis are accepted alongside boats, which matters on a river where personal watercraft are a major part of the traffic. Charges are described as minimal, folded into the holiday rather than run as a commercial berthing operation. The practical support services are holiday-oriented: a fish-cleaning table with fresh water at the marina, kayak hire from reception, and a tour desk that arranges deep-sea fishing charters, river cruises and, from June to November, whale-watching departures out of Mooloolaba or Hervey Bay. Resort facilities back the marina up as a family base: a heated wet-edge pool and spa on the river's edge usable year-round, a full-sized tennis court with hire gear available, a sauna, a games room with pool and table tennis tables, an undercover barbecue area, and free undercover secure parking, though a 1.93-metre height limit applies to the garage, relevant for anyone towing. Apartments are self-contained with full kitchens and laundries, so provisioning and fish cooking happen in-room. Vessels needing fuel, pump-out or mechanical work are served a few kilometres downriver and around the coast at Mooloolaba's marina and boatyard precinct, and Swan Boat Hire, within walking distance, covers visitors who arrive without a boat but want one for the week. It is best understood as a well-kept private pontoon system attached to a genuinely useful holiday tower.

The Maroochy River is the reason to stay, and its moods govern the boating. The river mouth at Cotton Tree has a shifting sand bar and is not an entrance for unfamiliar keelboats; most trailer boats launch at the nearby public ramps and work the river inside the bar, which is sheltered and forgiving. From Trafalgar's pontoon, the downstream run passes Chambers Island and the Cotton Tree esplanade to the river mouth, where the Maroochydore surf breaks off the north wall, while upstream the river winds past Bli Bli toward Dunethin Rock through mangrove country that fishes well for flathead on the run-out tide. Locals work the bridges and the channel edges for bream on the making tide, and mud crabs are pulled from pots dropped along the mangrove lines in the warmer months. The resort's walkability is its other strength: Sunshine Plaza, with more than 400 specialty stores and a cinema complex, is under a kilometre, the Ocean Street restaurant and entertainment strip is closer, and the patrolled beach at Maroochydore is a flat walk or short drive. Sunshine Coast Airport at Marcoola is about nine kilometres north, handy for fly-in guests. Boaters planning longer outings tow to Mooloolaba for ocean access through its reliable entrance, or north to Noosa for the river and lakes system. The river carries heavy holiday traffic in summer, including jet skis and hire pontoons, so early mornings are the angler's hours, and the resort's own pontoon, with a rod, a cleaning table and a pelican audience, is as good a sunset station as any on the lower river.
