Daydream Island Resort Marina is a small, tightly controlled resort harbour tucked behind a breakwater on the western side of Daydream Island, one of the Molle group in the heart of the Whitsundays, barely five kilometres across the passage from Shute Harbour on the mainland. The island itself is barely a kilometre long, a sliver of national park crowned by rainforest and ringed by fringing reef, and the marina exists for one purpose: to give boat-owning guests a way to arrive at, and stay at, the resort. This is emphatically not a public marina where cruising yachts drop in unannounced. Entry to the island is permitted only through the marina, every person aboard must hold a resort accommodation booking or a Day Visitor Pass, and overnight stays aboard berthed vessels are not permitted under any circumstances. That exclusivity has tightened over the years; bareboat charter operators now warn clients that the marina and private moorings are off-limits to their fleets, leaving only a single public mooring off Sun Lovers Beach, also called North Beach, for non-guests. For those who do qualify, the offer is appealing: eight marina berths plus four mooring buoys east of the breakwater, and a resort ashore with a lagoon pool and swim-up bar, multiple restaurants, a day spa, mini golf and the Living Reef, an outdoor aquarium where sharks, rays and reef fish are hand-fed at daily talks. The resort is the closest Whitsunday island to the mainland, which makes Daydream a gentle first or last night on a Whitsundays itinerary rather than a remote destination in itself.

Berthing & shoreside services

The marina offers eight berths tiered by vessel size: berths 1 and 2 suit vessels to 12 metres, berths 3 to 8 take vessels to 17 metres, and berth 9 handles vessels to 20 metres, with the facility rated overall for yachts to 40 metres. Every berth has a water supply; shore power is limited and historically not provided, so vessels relying on air-conditioning should confirm current arrangements when booking. Published overnight fees run from $110 for vessels up to 10 metres to $400 for up to 40 metres, with casual day rates of $125, $165 for multihulls, and jet skis at $25 an hour up to four hours or $50 overnight; all fees are paid in advance, collected at the front office on registration, and commercial operators must arrange separate rates. Four mooring buoys lie east of the breakwater for vessels to 11.5 metres (38 feet); mooring vessels must carry their own tender, tied to the small finger pontoon rather than the berth pontoon. Bookings are essential via the resort's online form or front desk, contactable on 1800 888 288, VHF channel 12 or the marina mobile, and confirmation generally comes within 24 hours. Conditions are strict: check-in from 11am, no pets anywhere on island or marina, radar and phone boosters off inside the marina, no discharge of toilets, vessels must hold $10 million public liability insurance with salvage and environmental cover, and tenders and gear stay on the vessel, never on pontoons. Ashore, berth and mooring guests use the resort's showers, toilets, laundry, restaurants, bars and day spa, which collectively are the marina's amenities; there is no fuel, pump-out, power pedestals or chandlery.

Approach from the mainland side in the Whitsunday Passage, calling on VHF 12 before entering; the marina sits in the lee of the island's western shore, protected by the breakwater from the prevailing south-easterly trades that blow through winter and spring. The four public-adjacent moorings east of the breakwater are usable only in light conditions, and local wisdom says pick the moorings farther from the reef, because wind-against-tide has pushed boats over the coral; there is no anchoring at Daydream at all. Lovers Cove is a protected reef area and cannot be used for access in private craft. Charter crews should take the hint from the bareboat operators' insurance warnings and treat the public mooring at Sun Lovers Beach as the only legal casual option, then walk straight to reception and pay the small per-person amenity fee. The Whitsundays' tides run to around four metres on springs, so allow scope on moorings. Provisioning is not the point here; Airlie Beach and its marina village, about 30 kilometres south-west, is the provisioning hub, while Hamilton Island Marina, a few miles east, has the fuel berth and chandlery that Daydream lacks. What Daydream does offer is a comfortable, family-friendly shore break on a cruise of the Whitsunday islands: Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet lie an easy day run south, and the island's Living Reef aquarium and rainforest walk fill a lazy afternoon when the trades are up and the anchorage rolly. Cruise Whitsundays ferries also call at the resort jetty from the mainland, handy for crew swaps or non-sailing friends joining mid-trip, and the island makes a gentle introduction for first-time Whitsundays skippers wary of the stronger tides farther out.
