About the marina

Port Geographe Marina is the boating heart of the Port Geographe canal development on the shore of Geographe Bay at Wonnerup, roughly seven kilometres from the centre of Busselton and about 100 nautical miles south of Fremantle. It is a privately operated, full-service marina of 157 pens, and for the south-west cruising fleet it fills an obvious gap: it is the one place on this coast where a 30-metre vessel can book a pen, fuel at any hour, haul out and eat dinner without leaving the property. The marina sits behind twin breakwaters at the head of a residential canal estate, so the view from most pens is a mix of moored hulls, canal homes and the eucalypt fringe of the bay. The clientele is correspondingly mixed. Busselton and Dunsborough locals keep trailer boats and family cruisers here year round, Perth owners base boats for summer, and cruising yachts use it as a staging and refit stop on the way around the capes. The Geographe Bay Yacht Club operates nearby, and The Deck, the marina's own bar and restaurant overlooking the pens, doubles as the social centre for both berth holders and the canal estate. What distinguishes the operation from the government boat harbours up and down this coast is that it runs as a single integrated business: pen rentals short or long term, a working boatyard, a chandlery and hospitality all under the same management, with a reputation among regulars for pens kept close to the gate and facilities maintained to a standard that draws favourable comparison with any marina in the state.

Berthing & shoreside services

The marina offers 157 floating pens ranging from 8 metres to 30 metres, available on both short-term and long-term arrangements, with catamaran berths among the mix and power and water supplied at the berths. Depth at the pens is shallow by ocean standards, under two metres at low water, and the layout is rated tight for manoeuvring, so bigger boats take care on the turns. Fuel is sold 24 hours a day, diesel and petrol, and there is a sewage pump-out, recycling facilities, showers, toilets, laundry and wifi for berth holders. The boatyard runs a straddle carrier travel lift for haul-outs, with boat maintenance and repair services on site and a chandlery for parts and consumables; rigging work and boat sales and brokerage are also listed among the services, making this one of the few places in the south-west where a full haul, antifoul and rig check can be organised through a single office. A boat ramp serves trailer boats, and a supermarket and marine trades operate within reach of the marina village. The Deck Marina Bar and Restaurant operates on site, giving the marina its own licensed venue. Bookings and pen enquiries go through the marina office on 08 9754 8300, and VHF channel 16 is monitored. The published picture from berth holders is of a yard that handles everything from trailer-boat slipping to serious cruising-yacht maintenance, with the travel lift, hardstand and trades clustered so that a vessel can come out of the water, onto the hard and back in without outside contractors if the owner prefers.

The approach to Port Geographe deserves respect. The entrance channel cuts through shallow Geographe Bay between the marina's breakwaters, and seagrass wrack shed by the bay's enormous meadows has plagued the entrance for years; suspended weed settles in the channel on the flood tide and must be dredged out. About 20,000 cubic metres of sediment and sand is removed annually, in recent campaigns by the cutter suction dredge Cooper II, and when the 2021 dredge was delayed the channel partly blocked and keel boats were trapped in the marina. The breakwaters themselves were realigned in 2013-14 after the original layout trapped wrack on Western Beach, and the state still runs a technical working group on coastal performance here. The practical advice is simple: check the current channel notices before arrival, especially in winter and early spring before the September dredge. Once inside, Geographe Bay is forgiving cruising ground, a broad sheltered bight with negligible tidal flow and sandy holding. Busselton Jetty, the 1.8-kilometre timber-piled jetty with its underwater observatory, lies a short hop west, and the town has full provisioning, marine trades and a hospital. Whale watching boats work the bay in season, and the Margaret River wine region is an easy day trip. Berth holders treat the marina as a year-round base because the bay stays sailable through winter when the capes are unpleasant, and the on-site restaurant means nobody has to cook after a wet day on the water. Skippers arriving from the north should also allow for the long shallow run along the bay before the entrance buoys appear, and night entries are best left to those with local knowledge of the channel marks. For trailer-boat visitors, the combination of the ramp, ticketed parking and 24-hour fuel makes the marina one of the more practical launch points for tuna and samson fish trips to the banks off the capes, and the Geographe Bay Yacht Club welcomes visiting sailors to its racing program through the season.
